Verner Wheelock Associates has partnered with First Aid Academy which is a leading provider of high quality, first aid training.
First Aid Academy can provide advice and training on all levels of first aid as well as specialist courses, and have provided us with information on the new qualifications introduced following a recent revision in First Aid legislation.
Which First Aid course do I or my staff need?
The revision in First Aid legislation came into effect from October 1st 2009. Since the previous revision the average UK workplace has changed dramatically. Today, workplaces generally are low risk and have immediate access to the emergency services via mobile phones. Under the new revision the traditional 4-day First Aid at Work course is no longer seen as appropriate for all employers.
To summarise, there are now just two levels of first aid accreditation:
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) for those employees in low risk workplaces e.g. offices, shops and call centres. This is a 6 hour (1-day) award.
First Aid at Work (FAW) for more remote or hazardous environments e.g. light industry, construction, food processing. This is an 18-hour (3-day) award, reduced from the previous 24-hour course length.
Additionally all employers are 'highly recommended', by the Health and Safety Executive, to give their staff responsible for first aid an annual 3-hour refresher training.
How do I know which course my staff need?
Employers are required to undertake a hazard assessment of the workplace to decide which course to take.
First Aid Academy is happy to provide you with a FREE hazard assessment for your workplace. Just give us a call on 0844 3571 426. As part of your hazard assessment the Academy may recommend that your staff undertake one of our environment specific first aid training courses because of legislation relating to your work sector or specific environments e.g. Outdoor, Sports, Paediatric, Security or Care sector specific first aid training.
